Portugal’s iconic tiles
Portuguese azulejos are more than decoration. For centuries they have shaped the visual identity of cities, covering facades, courtyards and interiors with intricate patterns and vibrant colors.Introduced to the Iberian Peninsula through Moorish influence and later refined by Portuguese artisans, azulejos became a distinctive element of Portuguese architecture.Each tile carries the character of craftsmanship and tradition. Our tiles are manufactured in a traditional workshop in lisbon, where they are produced and painted fully by hand, making every piece slightly unique.
An idea born in lisbon
Lisbon constantly felt alive. Walking to university each day, we kept passing buildings covered in azulejos and without noticing, they would lift our mood, just by making our everyday colorful and interesting.
But inside our apartments, it was a completely different picture. Ours looked the same as everyone else’s: white walls, neutral furniture, minimal grey accents. When we visited friends, it wasn’t much different. Different people, different lives, but somehow the spaces all felt interchangeable. We started talking about it, at first almost jokingly, how we could switch apartments and barely notice. But the more we thought about it, the more it felt like something was off.That’s when the idea came up: what if we could bring the vibrancy from Lisbons streets into the homes?
We decided to try it out. In a small workshop in Lisbon, we started building our first piece, experimenting with how tiles could be combined, replaced, and rearranged. We showed it to friends, got their reactions, and kept refining it.
We were convinced there was an opportunity to create furniture that brings character and individuality into the home.We called it Neotile.
